Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan, also known as Gili T, is considered the central spot for nightlife on the beautiful Gili Islands. Once you step off the boat, you’ll see horse carriages and beachside restaurants. The main street is lined with accommodations and cafes, offering a lively mix overlooking Gili Meno. If you wander off the main street, you’ll encounter quieter narrow lanes with plenty of coconut trees. In the midst of it, you can find calm and attractive villas, just a short walk from the harbor.

If you head to the opposite side of the island, you’ll discover the most beautiful beach with stunning sunset views over Bali’s volcano Agung. It’s less crowded, but there’s still a chance to dance on the beach and soak in the fantastic island vibe.

Sunset horseback riding

If you’re staying on the ‘main street,’ I highly recommend grabbing a bicycle and making your way to catch the sunset at least once. It’s about a 20-minute ride from the harbour to the other side of the island.

Gili T – Accommodations

Gili Trawangan offers a diverse selection of accommodations suitable for every budget. From cheap hostels catering to backpackers like Mad Monkey Gili T to cool villas for couples or families. The most beautiful floating brekfeast I have ever had was in Villas Edenia plus it has own pool and a lot of privacy

Gili Meno

For those in search of a peaceful getaway, Gili Meno is the perfect choice. As the smallest among three islands it is often hailed as the most peaceful and serene of the Gili Islands, offers a tranquil escape. As you explore the island, you’ll come across pristine beaches and a laid-back ambiance that captures the essence of a tropical paradise.

The Nest

As you wander away from the busier spots, you’ll find these hidden gems with soft, sandy shores and water that’s so clear you can see all the fish doing their thing. Gili Meno is like that one friend who’s always up for a low-key hangout.

One of the highlights of Gili Meno is its vibrant underwater world. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can explore colorful coral reefs teeming with marine life, including tropical fish and sea turtles. There are 3 underwater sightseeing spots next to the Gili Meno facing Gili T.

Bounty Wreck: Located at the southwest side of Gili Meno, the Bounty Wreck is likely a popular dive site, offering divers the opportunity to explore a sunken ship and observe marine life in the area.

‘Nest’ Sculptures by Jason DeCaires Taylor: The installation of 48 human-like statues called ‘Nest’ by the renowned sculptor and underwater photographer Jason DeCaires Taylor adds an artistic and unique element to the underwater landscape. These sculptures can provide an interesting and immersive experience for divers.

Sea Turtles at the Northwest Reef of Meno: The presence of sea turtles in the northwest reef of Gili Meno adds a natural and enchanting aspect to the underwater environment. Observing sea turtles in their natural habitat is often a highlight for many snorkelers and divers.

The island’s commitment to preserving its marine ecosystem enhances the experience, allowing visitors to witness the wonders of the underwater realm.

As the sun sets, casting warm hues across the horizon, Gili Meno transforms into a serene haven. The absence of motorized vehicles and the soft glow of beachside lanterns create an enchanting atmosphere.

How to Reach the Gili Islands

Getting to the Gili Islands is an exciting adventure. From Bali or Lombok, travellers have numerous choices including fast boats and flights. Whichever route you choose, whether by sea or air, stunning views make a travel worth a while

From Bali

From Bali, there are two options for traveling to Gili islands, by fast boat or plane.

By plane

  • 30-minute flight from Denpasar Bali airport to Lombok
  • price is around 60€ for one way per person
  • you need to take public ferry or speed boat to reach the Gili Islands from Bangsal

By boat

Another option would be taking a fast boat at Padang Bai and enduring an approximate travel time of 1 hour and 15 minutes up until around 2 hours depending on weather conditions.

  • Take speedboat or public boat from Padang Bai (departing from Sanur makes the trip too long)
  • Padang Bai is on the east coast, 1.15 minutes from Ubud, 1.30 minutes from Sanur
  • Check-in starts 1 hour before departure.

There are many boats offering the transfer. Since the trip can be unpleasant due to rough waters, we looked for bigger and more stable boat. We reccomend Eka Jaya and Blue Waters. Both are air-conditoned and with plenty of room for passengers. Some snacks and drinks are offered on boat and there is also many ladies selling snacks in Padang Bai harbour. We were visiting on low-season and still the Bluewaters was sold out 2 days prior, so booking your tickets ahead is good idea.

Traditional boats on the beach

It’s important to note that due to potential rough seas, travellers should be prepared for an adventurous voyage when traveling by boat. Anti-nausea medication can be taken as precaution. They are selling these in every pharmacy in Bali. Regardless of this factor though, traveling by boat is easier way to reach islands.

Swim alongside majestic sea turtles, admire playful clownfish (Nemo!), and perhaps even catch sight of elusive blacktip reef sharks! But do remember to prioritize safety at all times, always have a diving partner and remain vigilant for any currents while exploring these enchanting underwater landscapes.

If you are with friends or family i highly suggest taking the private tour. You can make your own schedule and it is more comfortable. We went on sea with company Sexy Turtle and they had the ‘fancy boat’ that meant you can sit on the rooftop of boat sunbathe and relax. Super cool way to include all friends even who don’t want to snorkle.

Island Hopping

Every island has its own attraction and activities to suit different preferences. Why limit yourself when you can go on an island-hopping adventure? By visiting all three islands – Gili Trawangan, Meno, and Air – you can enjoy snorkelling in the morning at one, savor a romantic lunch at another (Gili Meno), and witness a breathtaking sunset on yet another (Gili Air). With regular boat services available, exploring these three stunning islands is effortless.
