Why Nepal has a special place in my heart

Swayambhunath Stupa, the Monkey Temple, in Kathmandu

From Solo Explorer to Family traveller: A Return to Kathmandu

The refreshing Himalayan breeze played with the vibrant prayer flags set against the towering peaks. I once again found myself immersed in the captivating blend of colors and culture that defines Nepal. At 42, having explored over 40 countries, Nepal held a unique place in my heart. This time, I had the joy of sharing the experience with my entire family.

Nepal, a land where ancient traditions seamlessly intertwine with breathtaking landscapes, welcomed us warmly. Our journey began in the heart of the nation, Kathmandu, where age-old temples and lively markets told stories of resilience and heritage. Arriving on the same plane as 20 Buddhist monks added an extra layer of peace and anticipation for our exploration of this remote country.

In the whirlwind of Kathmandu, we found ourselves caught in a dust storm, the wind swirling tales from the Himalayas through the city. My wife, momentarily surprised by cows navigating the urban center, shared a laugh as we covered our mouths and noses, turning it into a family moment to remember. We were now prepared to uncover Nepal’s treasures.

On our family trip to Nepal, I traded my usual bicycle adventures in small hillside villages for a more relaxed exploration of Kathmandu. This time, we made sure to soak in the city’s rich culture and vibrant experiences.

Market Meets Monastery: Kathmandu’s Unique Blend of Shopping and Spirituality

We spent leisurely days wandering through Thamel, shopping for beautifully crafted souvenirs. The Budanath Stupa left us in awe with its magnificent presence, and at the Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery, more than 50 Tibetan monks blessed us with their peaceful rituals.

A local expert at the Monkey Temple taught us the art of playing a singing bowl, creating a serene melody that echoed through the ancient site. Our journey continued to Patan Durbar (royal palace) Square in Bhaktapur, where we marveled at the intricate temples, each telling a story of Nepal’s history.

Cycles of Life: From the Burning Ghat to Joyous Nepalese Weddings

One of the next days took an unexpected turn as we found ourselves witnessing both a funeral at the burning ghat and a lively Nepalese wedding ceremony later on. It was a profound experience, highlighting the circle of life in this captivating city.

This time, Kathmandu revealed its secrets and stories, providing a deeper connection to the heart of Nepal. The city’s vibrant markets, sacred sites, and unexpected moments made this journey an unforgettable exploration of culture and life.

Nagarkot’s Himalayan Panorama: A Glimpse into the Roof of the World

Our journey led us to Nagarkot, to the Mystic Mountain Hotel. From there, we witnessed the most amazing view of the Himalayas. Watching the sun rise, casting light on a distant peak said to be Mount Everest, was truly extraordinary. The beauty of that moment stayed with us, making our time at Nagarkot a memorable part of our adventure.

Boats, Peaks, and Serenity: Unveiling the Beauty of Pokhara’s Lakeside

Our journey from Nagarkot to Pokhara was a tale of changing landscapes and contrasting temperatures. The crisp mountain air of Nagarkot transformed into warmth as we arrived at Pokhara, where colorful boats adorned the serene lake.

To conclude our adventure, we ventured to Sarangkot, greeted by awe-inspiring views of Annapurna and valleys teeming with more eagles than we had ever seen in one place.

Trek, Freeze, Conquer: A Night at Australian Camp’s Icy Heights

Leaving behind our baby stroller, we packed our bags, fitted our smallest family member in a toddler carrier and ascended to Australian Camp for an overnight stay in a small village. The houses in Australian Camp lacked heating, and the tropical weather we enjoyed at Pokhara Lake gave way to freezing temperatures at our nightstay. Undeterred, we gathered at the tea house, huddling by the open fire for warmth. It became a cozy gathering spot where we exchanged stories with fellow trekkers, including some from far-off places like Saudi Arabia.

As the night grew colder, we collected every blanket available to ensure our children stayed warm. Despite the chilly conditions, we rose early the next morning to witness the magical sunrise over Annapurna, a breathtaking spectacle that made our chilly night’s efforts well worthwhile.

Guardians of the Himalayas: Gurkha Soldiers and the Spirit of Nepalese Freedom

The spirit of Nepal’s resilience against foreign dominance resonated profoundly in the tales of the legendary Gurkha soldiers. Famed for their courage and unwavering loyalty, these warriors have steadfastly protected their homeland from succumbing to external rule. While exploring the Gurkha Museum in Pokhara, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the indomitable spirit that courses through the veins of these formidable defenders.

Coming from Estonia, a country that endured 800 years of occupation from various superpowers before attaining freedom in the early 20th century, I deeply appreciate and admire the bravery displayed by Nepal and its people in maintaining their independence. The echoes of Nepal’s resistance serve as a source of inspiration, showcasing the strength that arises from a collective determination to remain free.

Nepal’s Open Arms: A Cultural Palette Painted in Warmth and Colors

The warmth of the Nepalese people etched an unforgettable imprint on my soul. From the vibrant streets of Kathmandu to the tranquil villages nestled in the Annapurna region, their hospitality knew no bounds. Whether engaged in a cozy teahouse chat or sharing tales at a local handcraft store, each encounter spoke volumes about the richness of human connection.

In the end, our journey through Nepal transcended mere physical exploration; it evolved into a soulful odyssey. It became a dance with the mountains, a harmonious melody with the people, and a joyous celebration of a country that not only preserved its culture but also generously shared it with those eager to listen.

Farewell to Kathmandu: A Promise of Return in Every Sunset

As our plane ascended from Tribhuvan International Airport, the vibrant Kathmandu Valley, with the majestic Himalayas as its backdrop, gradually slipped away beyond the airplane window. In that moment, I knew: Nepal held more treasures for me, and one day, I would return to delve even deeper into its offerings.
